According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, South Carolina’s Latino population increased over 360 percent between 1990 and 2004 (from roughly 30,000 to almost 140,000).
Approximately 62 percent of South Carolina’s Latinos are of Mexican origin. Individuals from other Central American countries account for 11 percent of the total Latino population; those of South American origin make up 7 percent; and 10 percent are of Puerto Rican origin. Males comprise 56 percent of the total Latino population in the state, according to the 2005 American Community Survey.
Based on immigration rates, school enrollment data and birth rates, researchers at the University of South Carolina’s Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies estimate South Carolina’s Latino population at between 400,000 and 500,000.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement Raids Plant in Asheville, NC

On August 12, 2008, 57 workers were arrested by agents of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Mills Manufacturing Corporation in Asheville, NC on charges related to immigration violations.
